Record-Breaking Water Conference Showcases Te Pae Christchurch
In late September 2025, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre played host to the largest water sector event ever held in New Zealand – the 10th IWA-ASPIRE and Water New Zealand Conference & Expo.
The five-day event attracted 2,494 delegates from 50 countries, combining the International Water Association’s Asia Pacific Group (IWA-ASPIRE) biennial conference with Water New Zealand’s national conference and expo. Together, they delivered a programme of 13 streams, 200+ technical presentations, and 273 expo stands, alongside workshops, plenaries, and cultural experiences.
A World-Class Venue for a Global Audience
The co-located event utilised Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre and Christchurch Town Hall, just minutes apart, giving delegates easy access to sessions and networking opportunities in the heart of the city.
Dr. Marion Savill, Conference Co-Chair and New Zealand Chair of the International Water Association, said the proximity of venues and the city’s hospitality added to an enjoyable experience:
“The proximity of the two venues, accommodation, restaurants, the gardens, and the river in Christchurch had added to an enjoyable experience. Everyone loved the locations, the relaxed New Zealand way, and the content. I kept hearing ‘this is a fabulous conference’.”
Dr. Robert Bos, Programme Committee Co-Chair and Senior Advisor IWA, highlighted the role of the venue in fostering collaboration:
“The excellent conference facilities in Christchurch provided a conducive environment for connecting, networking, and information exchange.”
Empowering Tomorrow
Themed ‘Empowering Tomorrow – Smart Water Solutions for Resilient Communities’, the conference brought together international water and sanitation professionals, scientists, and experts to share knowledge and explore solutions for a sustainable water future.
The sold-out expo hall was alive with innovation, as exhibitors showcased technologies and tools driving the sector forward. Delegates also enjoyed a rich cultural programme, including a traditional mihi whakatau Māori welcome and a gala dinner featuring a modern twist on a hāngī meal prepared by acclaimed chef Monique Fiso.
Event Highlights: Celebrating Success
Dr. Marion Savill reflected on the significance of the event:
“This was one of the first times that a combined national water event, the Water New Zealand Conference and Expo, and ASPIRE, joined together as one. With almost 2500 people, it was particularly well-attended and one of the most successful IWA-ASPIRE events to date.”
